The Kjeldahl method is used to determine the nitrogen content of a sample. In this analysis, the sample is digested with a strong acid and the free nitrogen reacts to form ammonium sulfate.
Catalysts (tablets) are added to speed up this process. The next step is distillation followed by a titration. Several chemicals are required in this process. From acids for the digestion, to the volumetric solutions and indicators for the final titration.
The Kjeldahl method is used for the quantitative determination of nitrogen contained in organic substances plus the nitrogen contained in the inorganic compounds ammonia and ammonium (NH3/NH4+) in all kinds of food or environment samples such as:
- Meat and related product such as sausages
- Grain and flour
- Milk and related products (cheese and milk powder)
- Water (waste and drinking) or effluents....
